I’m excited to be participating in WFMW…I’ve been reading everyone else’s tips for a while but never felt I had anything to contribute. Until last week. OMG Y’all, (sorry, DH informs me that as a native Michigander, I can’t say that). Anyway, I found a FAB way to clean my windows. DD has been wanting to help me clean so I made my own window cleaner (complements of About.com).
Here is the “recipe”.
1 cup rubbing alcohol
1 cup water
1 tablespoon vinegar
Yep. That’s it. That in a spray bottle with a microfiber cloth. My ONLY complaint is that you can’t mist it on–it tastes awful! But Oh. My. Goodness, Ladies. I have dabbled in homemade cleaners but have never found anything that works BETTER than the store-bought kind. But this is TONS better than a roll of paper towels and windex. Seriously!
Anyway, this new cleaner certainly WORKS FOR ME!

6 January 2011 at 11:18 PM (14 years ago)Having cleaned windows professionally for over 20 years, I have had the opportunity to experiment with hundreds of different Window Cleaning solutions.
I do not doubt that the vinegar solution is more effective than the store brand, however, there are several drawbacks to this solution. If your are cleaning windows outside, the rubbing alcohol will evaporate very quickly and leave only vinegar water. This would still clean well but having your hands in Vinegar for hours at a time is very unpleasant both on the skin and on the NOSE!
I would like to suggest a solution that is not only just as simple to make, but is also twice as effective as the Vinegar/alcohol solution. Take 2 gallons of warm water in a bucket and add about 2 cap-fulls of LEMON ammonia. Then add one good long squirt of LEMON Joy (Ultra). You can still use the microfiber towel to
mix up the solution(make suds) and then wring it out and use it to apply solution to the window. You will then need to use an inexpensive shower squeegee(dollar store) to remove the solution by pulling it from left side to right across the window. Presto! Brilliant shine and your hands and the room smell amazing when you are through!
