I mentioned last week that I finally got my artist & composer schedule set for the year and I actually purchased the books as well. Since they are really just cultural enrichment, I scheduled them all year. Here is the artist schedule for the year:
- August – Michelangelo
- September – Rousseau (Dreaming with Rousseau)
- October – Matisse (A Magical Day with Matisse)
- November – Monet (A Picnic with Monet)
- December – Seurat (Sunday with Seurat)
- January – Picasso (Painting with Picasso)
- February – Renoir (Sharing with Renoir)
- March – Van Gogh (In the Garden with VanGogh)
- April – DaVinci
- May – Cassatt (Quiet Time with Cassatt)
- June – Gaugin (On an Island with Gaugin)
- July – Degas (Dancing with Degas)
I absolutely LOVE the Mini Masters board books. They are perfect to introduce art to very little kids. The Degas one has a lovely rhyming text that goes with it; we’ve gotten that one from the library a LOT.
Our composers schedule was very organic. I didn’t buy anything to do it. Bones & I LOVE classical music and we bought a 10-volume set of the Masters of Classical Music years ago either through the BMG Classical Music Club or from Sam’s Club. If you keep your eyes open, you can find sets like this super cheap at places like Costco or Walmart. Or you can just start collecting individual CD’s from the bargain bins or used sales/stores. We rounded out the schedule with two of our more modern favorites.
- August – Verdi
- September – Chopin
- October – Strauss
- November – Rodgers & Hammerstein
- December – Beethoven
- January – Mozart
- February – John Williams
- March – Bach
- April – Tchaikovsky
- May – Wagner
- June – Vivaldi
- July – Schubert
The other thing I looked at when putting these schedules together is that about 1/2 of them are on their birthdays (the rest were duplicates). So if you were doing more in-depth lesson plans, you could learn about the life and such too.
Do you do art appreciation? What are your favorite resources? Do you have any Michelangelo or DaVinci resource recommendations?

31 July 2010 at 1:03 AM (14 years ago)Your plan sounds very similar to mine for this year! We will be studying a different artist and a different composer each month, too. I am really excited about this new schedule, since last year’s plan didn’t work so well:) I’m using a workbook called Great Composers for that part, but for the art aprec. I am using art books that I’ve collected at used books stores, etc. We’ll probably use the internet to do research, too. Thanks for the idea of looking for used classical cd’s…don’t know why I didn’t think of that!

30 July 2010 at 7:59 AM (14 years ago)Looks like a fun year. We’ve always done some form of art and music appretiation but this will be our first year doing formal artist and composer studies. We’re only doing four of each. I have a demanding toddler and I didn’t want to overdo it. She’s created havoc during our school since her birth. LOL This will, hopefully, be our first year doing more than the basics.
We’re going to be using the “Getting to Know the World’s Great Artist/Composer” series for our study, along with what I already have on hand.
