I have made Sloppy Joes numerous times AND ways. Finally, my husband had to concede that yes, my mom’s recipe really is the best. If you don’t eat so much meat or want to be frugal, you can use lentils to stretch it further or substitute ground turkey and it is still excellent!
You need:
· 1 tsp. mustard
· 1 c. ketchup
· ¾ c. water
· 2 tsp. brown sugar
· 1 lb. ground meat
· Hamburger buns
Directions:
Brown meat in frying pan. Mix ketchup, mustard, brown sugar and water in glass mixing cup. Add to ground meat and stir until completely coated. Heat on medium until water is boiled away (about 25 minutes). Serve on bread or hamburger buns.
Do you happen to have a recipe for homemade buns? If so, leave me a link in the comments! I would LOVE to try them!!

27 September 2010 at 8:11 AM (14 years ago)This is the least complicated sloppy joe recipe that I’ve seen. I’m still trying to find the “best” one. Sometimes the best food is the most simple. Thanks for filling the “hole” in our menu this week!
I have a great recipe that we use for buns–I’ll send it along.
