I just love when God talks to me. I requested this book to review this summer from Sophia Institute Press as part of their blogger review program. And then it sat. And I read (most of) it. And then it sat. And then I read it again. And then it sat. And then, after spending much time nesting and writing my Fall Into Reading Challenge pre-baby checklist, I picked it back up to be sure I finished all my obligations before everything went out the window.
It couldn’t have been more perfect timing. My husband, who has been spending large amounts of time on becoming more professionally proficient in certain areas (his form of nesting?), has actually taken several personality assessments in the last week. Which he would normally be loathe to do. But he also went to a conference where the traditional Greek Temperaments were discussed while I was reading this book and trying to determine which type we both were. Since he had just gotten back that evening and we were arguing about it, we decided to take a test to find out FOR SURE which we were.
That made this book INTENSELY more valuable than it was the other 2 times I had read it. I thought I knew my type, but since this book was primarily about interacting with your spouse, it was a little lighter in description than the first (The Temperament God Gave You), which I haven’t read. Turns out that I was right, but I had my primary and secondary switched. I knew Bones was a Sanguine, but hadn’t a clue as to his secondary temperament.
Once you know the temperament of you and your spouse, this book is amazing. I was astounded to find out how accurate it was! In fact, once we had finished our tests, I read him the text out loud, and he commented on how it’s amazing that two people so different can live together at all. He and I happened to be Sanguine/Melancholic, respectively which is the most “diametrically opposed…couple.” Yeah, that’s us. Ahem.
Anyway, back to the book. The book starts out with what the traditional Greek temperaments are and what they look like, both with traits, examples and even how they interact with others. They also include a Winnie-the-Pooh character as a sort of example :). A chapter is spent on communicating with each different type of temperament. Then they get to the nitty gritty…how each couple should best interact with each other.
This book is fabulous! I can’t tell you how all my husband’s little idiosyncrasies suddenly dissolved while I was reading this book. It’s just the way he is. Just like I’m picky about having things just so, he is, well, not. I would recommend this book to anyone hoping to understand their significant other better. I would also recommend it to anyone who really just needs to figure out how to determine how to deal with someone they just don’t understand (at work, in your family, or among friends/acquaintances). This is an excellent book to add to your home library for future reference/frequent reminder :). I thoroughly recommend it!
