Sometimes I am surprised by books. Many times the books I get from Loyola Press are picked for me. Some are wonderful and some are…well, not. This one surprised me by how much I enjoyed it.
Thrift Store Saints: Meeting Jesus 25 cents at a Time by Jane Knuth was a fabulous book! The book is a collection of true stories by the author of how her encounters with the poor have given her insights into the heart of Christ. Not only did I learn that the St. Vincent dePaul Society does more than operate thrift stores, but it gave me a whole new respect for all the work they do. As Jane says, the thrift stores are a “front” for the real work they do in ministering to the poor — providing financial assistance, clothing, food & furniture. Jane was able to share what she learned in such an effective way for me.
She wasn’t all preachy up on high about her experiences in the inner-city Kalamazoo. She told you all about her assumptions and struggles and how she was JUST LIKE ME. And she shared how she learned and changed and grew. It makes me want to grow, too.
See for yourself. Read the book. Find your opportunity to put on the heart of
Christ.
