Recently the book club of Mothers In Christ decided to read the small, yet heady book Apostolate of Holy Motherhood. Before we read the book, I tried to look up information about the book and it is nearly impossible to find anything about it. It’s also impossible to find–we bought our copies used from Amazon.com.
The Apostolate of Holy Motherhood is a book of private visions from Mary and the Christ child to an anonymous woman referred to as Mariamante, The visions aim for the restoration and sanctification of the vocation of holy motherhood and have received the Imprimatur from the Church. As with any private revelations, there is nothing in them that is contrary to the teachings of the church but you are not obliged to believe them.
There are three basic tenants of the apostolate:
1. “they must devote all their time, energy, and resources, including their very selves to the greater glory of God and the pursuit of the Divine Will in their lives;
2. “(they) must be consecrated to My Most Holy Mother under the title ‘Mother of God’;
3. “(they) must seek to fulfill their daily duties, that is, as mothers and wives in an exemplary manner of holiness by pursuing the contemplative life in their home…” (pg. xii)
I have to be honest. It’s a tough book to read. I (and others in the group) resisted it. Frequently, we have been told by priests and others that as mothers, we are doing God’s work and that is enough. But if you have a sense that it’s not, or that you could or should be doing more, this book will tell you that you are right and here is what your priorities should be. This book truly shows you how to put God first in your life. It’s tough — but the more I think about it, the more I feel drawn to it.
There are 18 points that are brought up in the text as how to accomplish the three basic tenants. Over the next year, I will be publishing a post a month covering the 18 points and what they are and how to incorporate them in your daily life, if you are not already.
Since we just finished Lent and are in the season of Easter and just had Divine Mercy Sunday, I will start with Confession and Holy Eucharist (Communion) next week. Please prayerfully consider getting a copy of the Apostolate of Holy Motherhood and joining us. Even if you don’t, I hope that the information might enrich your spiritual life anyway. God bless!

18 September 2017 at 10:28 AM (7 years ago)Hello Jen – I am in a Catholic book group that is reading the Apostolate of Holy Motherhood. Above you mention you were going to publish a post a month on the 18 points covered in the book. Can you kindly direct me to where I can find those posts? Additionally, a study guide or discussion questions would be appreciated! This is such a life-changing book that I’d love to have a foundation for our discussion. God Bless!

26 October 2013 at 2:10 AM (11 years ago)there is no website or group; if you read the book it does specify that’s its a group of mothers dedicated to prayer and service as wife and mother in the home, removed from the world. underground is basically the will of the Blessed Mother but by no means weak or limited. have had the great privilege of the sacred heart enthronement of my home and family we do wear our scapulars daily. just keep praying and serving. I want to keep this apostolate of mothers in my prayers and i’m thinking each one of us does the same so tho “underground” we’re not alone.

17 June 2012 at 2:28 PM (12 years ago)I recently read the book while on retreat with some sisters and found it very beautiful and applicable, even though I am not a mother. I am going to buy copies for my family members who are mothers because I believe it is so important. The publisher information in the book is: The Richle Foundation, P.O. Box 7, MIlford, OH 45150 (1991) ISBN: 1-877678-18-X

24 May 2012 at 4:13 PM (12 years ago)I just picked up this book in our Chapel this week, and also am very drawn to it! It is so relevant to what is going on today and the need to return to strong families. I will be trying to live these principles… I hope it catches on, if it hasn’t already.

22 March 2012 at 11:50 AM (13 years ago)I found this book after confession this Wednesday and it made me weep for joy and the truth just struck me with such profound wisdom. I could almost feel being now a mother of two children and this now my vocation two years now going on three soon in November that it spoke straight to my heart. I have a priest at our parish who name is Fr Francis and then we have two others that are from the Sri Lanka area and it amazed me that this book had so much truth in it that related to me. I hope this is just something God put in my path to help me be a better Mother and Wife to my family as I read this during lent entering soon the Easter Season. Thanks for blogging and telling me others are reading it too. I hope to grow and understand the truly gift of the holy calling of Motherhood more as I continue in this reading material.

19 January 2011 at 8:09 PM (14 years ago)I too have read that book some years ago and completely agree with everything in it…
Truly, and indeed this is true and IMHO is exactly what Our Lord would have us do as mothers. Also, though, if it is a true need that a mother should have to go out and work then Our Father would sustain us in grace and His balance to do His Will there within the home and out of it for the sake of the true need. Also, many husbands make their wives work and or make their wives feel as though they should, and this is such a grave injustice to their families.
It is quite simple in balance…if one shall be out, one shall be in, yes?
Gods Love,Peace and Strength be with you in this great cause that goes so against the thought of the world
