I have always wanted to read Shakespeare. When we read it in high school I loved it, but man is it hard to get through when someone is not guiding you through it all! So when Courting Cate by Leslie Gould was offered for review, I jumped on it. And I was not disappointed.
The first in the Courtships of Lancaster County series, Courting Cate, is a modern Amish based retelling of the Taming of the Shrew. I had to say that there were times where I felt so in tune with Cate that I actually cried for her. She was resigned to being a spinster and was often made fun of by the people in her peer group. When Pete came to town, she actually has a chance for love. Or does she?
It’s a great story and there were several things that made this different than most Amish fiction. One is that it’s really written from a modern point of view. That is, Cate, is an avid reader. She thinks and talks like a normal person with only a few Amish words — like mom, dad, baby, etc. She also doesn’t feel very Amish as a bookkeeper and a poor cook & housekeeper. But then she gets married and is forced to acquire new skills.
Overall, I loved this book! It was clean and was about the Amish, as well as being a lot about everyday people as well. And the twists and turns were quite unexpected and not predictable. I mean, it does have a happy ending, but the turns to get there were not something I would have anticipated. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Amish fiction and think it would be a great start for someone who has always wanted to try one but is apprehensive.
