It’s so appropriate that I received One Thousand Gifts Devotional: Reflections on Finding Everyday Graces for review this month. I mean after all, it is Thanksgiving and every year I try to participate in the #30DayGive. As important as giving is, gratitude may almost be more important. I know that I am never as grateful as I should be especially in this season of my life as in no other I have SO MUCH to be appreciative of.
Can I tell you a secret? Until I agreed to review this book, I had NEVER read anything by Ann Voskamp. No, I haven’t lived in a cave, but I AM extremely skeptical by nature. Especially since everyone loves her. so. much. So I went to her website and read that for a little while. And I noticed that her book was on sale on Kindle for dirt cheap and started to read it. THEN.
Then, she was our closing keynote speaker at #allume. I’m not going to lie. She brought me to tears. More than once. I’m also not going to tell you that the whole holding up the hands and singing thing at the end didn’t freak me out just a little (that’s just not how I roll — I’m VERY stoic). But Ann was so authentic and so humble, that I just couldn’t NOT like her.
So about her newest book, One Thousand Gifts Devotional: Reflections on Finding Everyday Graces. I was surprised, but I really liked it. The reflections were short, only 2-5 pages. This really worked for me because while I have grown to like Ann, I can really only read her (beautiful, poetic) flowery language for so long before it just loses me. What can I say, I have a very short attention span for art. I’m a get down to brass tacks kind of girl as Lili Von Shtupp would say.
I received a galley copy but I got to see the final version at the conference and it is a beautiful hardcover book with quality pages. I would recommend this book as a gift to anyone who enjoys reading & doing devotionals in their quiet time. Make it a gift to yourself. Slow down and give thanks to the Lord for both the ordinary and extraordinary throughout the holiday season and prepare you for the New Year to come.
You can pick up your copy of One Thousand Gifts Devotional: Reflections on Finding Everyday Graces starting today! (With Amazon Prime, it should be there Friday.)
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publicity company in exchange for an honest review. All references to Mel Brooks movies were my own and were in no way condoned by either Ann, the publicity company, or Mel Brooks :).
