Since Itty Bitty is so hands on, I thought I’d give sensory bins another go this school year. While I had created them for my 2 year old, my 5 year old is loving them too.
I created our first themed sensory bin for Pirate Week. Since we celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day every year, I had several items to put in the bin. I keep my bins in a typical plastic shoebox, one for each base.
Pirate Sensory Bin Bases
For a pirate themed bin, you could use one of the following bases:
Black beans
Oatmeal
Cornmeal
Lentils
Sand
Blue aquarium rocks
Blue water beads
It takes 4-5 bags of black beans to fill a plastic shoebox about half way.
Sensory Items
We had several items that are easily or cheaply available for sensory bins
Gold & silver coins
Plastic beads
Jewels
Gem stones
Pirates Toob figures
Peter Pan figurines
Jake & the Neverland Pirates figurines
You could also add island, ocean or boat themed items.
Sharks
Fish
Rowboats
Oars
Flags
Blue glass beads (like for centerpieces)
Gold rings
Treasure boxes
Maps
Bottles (like message in a bottle)
Compass
Small spyglass
X’s
Bones/skeletons
My kids are really enjoying playing with these sensory boxes. Stay tuned for more pirate week fun :).
Do you have any ideas for a pirate sensory bin that I haven’t thought of? I’d love to hear them!
