The last year has been a year of change. I pretty much quit the rat race. I quit working and for the most part, quit blogging as a job. Instead, I have been living life as a homeschool mom of three lovelies 7 and under.
You can take the girl out of the business but you can’t take the business out of the girl and so I have been putting my energy into being better at my job of home manager. I’ve been taking Misty Winkler’s Simplified Organization & Work the Plan courses. In them, she talks a lot about habits.
So when I got the email about reviewing Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives, I was ready. And I wasn’t disappointed. I took pages of notes and kept reading portions out loud to my husband as we drove to Florida.
Gretchen Ruben, in Better Than Before, covers 5 main areas relating to Habits:
- Self-Knowledge
- Pillars of Habits
- The Best Time to Begin
- Desire, Ease & Excuses
- Unique, Just Like Everyone Else
This is not your typical book about forming habits. It is as much anecdotal as it is scientific. Sometimes her advice contradicts itself, but since forming habits is such a personal issue and can be contradictory in the same person, it makes perfect sense. In fact, on the very first page, she tells you that “no one-size-fits-all solution exists.”
I was surprised at some revelations about myself and found myself nodding enthusiastically with other ideas. I had noticed several of her observations but I never put them together before.
Better Than Before is part story and part how to. If you have any habits on your list of goals for this year, Better Than Before is now available in paperback. I’m sure you will be able to find a few nuggets to finally achieve your goal or the confidence to drop them guilt-free.
If you are interested in a sample (e-book or audiobook) or to peek at the resources mentioned in Better Than Before, check out Gretchen’s webpage all the goodies!
I would highly recommend reading this book if you have any habits on your goal list for this year. You may just find the key to finally making it happen!
